Question by Eve B: How do i become a psychotherapist?
1)what courses do study at college?
2)what do i study in unversity?
3) where do i get the job?

Best answer:

Answer by cleeps
1 & 2) Most people study psychology in their undergrad. You need a graduate degree to be a psychotherapist, so you will have to go on after that (most people go 6 to 11 years total). I am in grad school and there is a girl in my class who took English, but has a minor in psych. It’s important that you volunteer like crazy to get experience before applying to grad school.

As for which classes you’ll study, that will depend on your school and what they offer. It will likely be intro to psychology, a course on social psych, developmental psych, personality, etc…

3) You get jobs all over the place. Non-profit agencies, private practice, schools…

The best thing you can do is to phone your local psychological association. They will tell you what courses you need and what criteria must be filled to be a psychologist in your area. They are also a good resource for finding a job after!

Question by PsychGirl: Any School Counseling majors or professionals out there? I have some questions for you.?
I know internships for school psychologists are typically paid, but what about school counseling internships?

Also, what is the average salary? I have looked through bls.gov and other sites but I want info from an actual counselor.

What is the job market like?

Best answer:

Answer by doc
elementary, middle school, and high school counseling internships are not paid. They are part of your education courses at college.

As for the average salary- well, that depends on the state and school district.

The job market also depends on the state and school district. If you know what state you would like to live in, you can search that state’s department of education web-site for information.

Question by yorugua: Do you think Bush was innocent or that bin Laden is dead?
Just think. In the middle of last year, when this war was still only
gestating, George W. Bush stated that ‘we have to be ready to attack
in any obscure corner of the world’; ergo, Iraq is an obscure corner
of the world. Does Bush believe that civilization began in Texas and
his fellow Texans invented writing? Has he really never heard of the
library of Niniveh, the tower of Babel or the hanging gardens of
Babylon? Has he really never heard even one of the tales in the
thousand and one nights of Baghdad?
Who elected him president of this planet anyway? I was never asked to
vote in any such elections. Were you?
Would we elect a president who was deaf to the population? Would we
elect a man incapable of hearing any but the echoes of his own voice?
A man deaf to the ceaseless thunder of millions of voices in the
streets declaring peace on war?
He has not even heeded a word of friendly advice from the German
writer Günter Grass. Realising that Bush felt driven to demonstrate
something very important to his daddy, Grass suggested that he see a
psychoanalyst rather than bombing Iraq.
In 1898, president William McKinley declared that God had commanded
him to seize the Philippines in order to civilize and christianize
their inhabitants. McKinley said that he had spoken with God at
midnight as he roamed the corridors of the White House. Over a century
later, president Bush assures us that God is on his side in the
conquest of Iraq. What time was it and where was he, we wonder, when
he got the divine message?
We might also ask why the messages to Bush and to the Pope at Rome
were so contradictory. War has been declared in the name of the
international community, which is sick of wars. And as per usual, war
has been declared in the name of peace.
It’s not about oil, they say. And yet, if Iraq produced radishes
rather than oil, would anyone seriously suggest invading?
Have Bush, Dick Cheney and sweet Condoleeza Rice really all given up
their top jobs in the oil industry? Why is Tony Blair so obsessed with
the Iraqi dictator? Could it be because 30 years ago Saddam Hussein
nationalized the British Iraq Petroleum Company? And how many oil
wells is José María Aznar expecting to get when the spoils are
divvied up?
The oil-drunk consumer society is deathly afraid of withdrawal
symptoms. And Iraq is where the black elixir is cheapest, and possibly
most plentiful.
In a peace demonstration in New York, one placard read: “Why is our
oil beneath their sands?”. The United States says it expects a lengthy
military occupation following its victory. US generals will be in
charge of setting up democracy in Iraq.
Will this be a democracy like in Haiti, the Dominican Republic or
Nicaragua? They occupied Haiti for 19 years and set up a military
power base that eventually became the dictatorship of Francois
Duvalier. They occupied the Dominican Republic for nine years and laid
the foundations for the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. They
occupied Nicaragua for 21 years and founded the dictatorship of the
Somoza family.
The Somoza dynasty, set on the throne by the Marines, lasted half a
century before being swept away by popular fury in 1979. Then,
president Ronald Reagan got on his horse and set out to rescue the
country from the threat of the Sandinista revolution. Among the
poorest of the poor, Nicaragua was a country with all of five
elevators, and one escalator that didn’t work. Nevertheless, Reagan
proclaimed that Nicaragua was a menace; and as he spoke, TV screens
showed a map of the United States with a red stain spreading from the
south to illustrate the course of the imminent invasion. Can president
Bush be copying the panic-rousing speeches of his predecessor? Can
Bush be saying Iraq where Reagan said Nicaragua?
Newspaper headlines in the run-up to war: “The United States is
prepared to resist attack”.
Record sales of insulating tape, gas masks, radiation pills … Why is
the executioner more afraid than the victim? Is it only this climate
of collective hysteria? Or does it tremble at the foreseeable
consequences of its actions? And what if Iraqi oil sets fire to the
world? Will this war not be just the vitamin shot that international
terrorism was looking for?

Best answer:

Answer by Tony
both
and only read your question not your rant

I have worked at a grocery store for almost four years but I want to actually work in the field I’m going into. Do you recommend any jobs that I should be looking into to help get me more so on that path? I’m going for my bachelors degree in Kinesiology so I can’t be a PTA.

Question by Maria A: Need advice regarding current economy and psychology careers?
I’m currently in the process for applying to graduate school. I just put in my application to a PsyD in Clinical Psychology 5 year program. I am having second thoughts because I am not sure if I am making the right decision due to the economy. Just today in the Chicago area they announced they will be closing 5 mental health centers (private owned). Are there any clinical psychologists who can share their experience? Does anyone know individuals in this field who could share advice and stories?

Best answer:

Answer by lovelysmurf
I would say to do it if you are scientist and research minded, or want to teach college. You will spend the same amount of time for an MSW, but the last 3 years will be employed supervised at $ 40K per year and there is a huge demand for social workers now, especially gerentology. Do not get a PsyD to do mental health direct care, because you will not be doing that. Doctorates usually teach or do research, practicioners are the ones who treat, think social worker, nurse practicioner, and licensed practical counselor. You could be wasting alot of time. I was in your shoes and decided to go with the MSW program instead, now I can teach in MSW grad programs, work in a school, hospital, private practice, or clinic.

How Can Berke’s Pre Employment Test Help You Hire Great People? People are hard wired with traits that determine what they do well, what they do easily and what they enjoy. When people take our pre employment test, we zero in on what makes them tick. We measure their personality traits, natural talents and intelligence. At the same time we work with you to define what it takes to be successful in the job you are seeking to fill. We help you create a customized set of job targets. Berke then compares the person to your job and tells you immediately what it could take months to find out on the job. Berke’s Employment Test Measures More Than Personality In order to be successful in a job, it helps if the person has the natural personality traits required by the job. But it takes more than personality to be successful in a job. It also helps if the employee has the right natural talents and cognitive abilities that are shown to drive success at your company, in your specific job. The Berke measures not only personality, but also natural talents and intelligence How is Berke’s Employment Test different? Personality, Talent, and Intelligence: Berke’s employment test measures personality, talent, and intelligence — the only pre employment test for hiring that assesses all three. Science: We use science extensively – to measure people, to measure jobs, and to measure the fit between the two. Reports with Job Matching: Berke’s employment report gets to the point — quickly. You …

Question by Pandaboo: What career/course should i do?
at the moment, i’m studying A level french, A level Psychology, AS sociology and AS English language. My predicted grades for when i finish all my subjects is ACCC, BCCC atleast. I’ll be taking a 3rd year at college to finish sociology and english and in that year, i’ll alos be loking for work experience and possible part time jobs. I’m not sure what i want to do at uni and i have to sort out my personal statement and UCAS thing next year and i need to know what course i can go for at uni. I’ve thought about teaching, as a career, but i’m worried i’ll end up choosing a PGCE and then find out too late that teaching isnt for me. I’ve also thought about being a psychoanalyst, because i’m interested in dream analysis and helping others but i don’t know if i would exactly be getting to explore any of my ‘talents’ or be creative, as much. I’m the type of person that wants a job where i’m happy, the pay is decent, i’m helping people, my work is recognised and i love being creative at any given chance. I also like making and collaborating videos in my free time and i thought about filmmaking but i don’t think i’d like to do it all the time and realistically, i’d probs spend a year or two being an unpaid runner anyway I know, i sound like an annoying brat, but please, if anyone has any advice, please let me know cus i’m stumped on what to do for and after uni. Thanks x

Answer by Evie k
A Sociology degree. Only reason is because you strike me as person who would have lively discussions and memorable arguments with your classmates.

I don’t know what to do. I want to work with children, but I know as social worker you don’t make much money working with children. How much does a school social worker make in Georgia, do school counselors make more than school social workers? I would absolutely love both jobs, so the next logical thing is to look at job security and salary. Please provide me with any information excluding payscale.com or bls.gov. Thanks!

Answer by Walter Jones
the social work degree is more fluid but you will have to have a PPS master’s degree in counseling to work in k-12
